Our story
It all began with the notion of having my own personal cut flower garden so that I would not have to disturb the beauty of my flowerbeds. Boy did that idea expand quickly! Why not grow enough flowers to be able to share the beauty with others? After a lot of hard work, many mistakes (I’ve killed my share of flowers), relocations, pivots, and the help of a very patient and supportive husband, I'm finally seeing my crazy idea come to fruition.
A Look at the Farm
I’m so excited to share Larch Farm with you all! The flower field is nestled on 3+ acres amongst the pine trees I grew up climbing and building tree forts in. The field is on land my parents purchased back in 1973. Over the years many critters have been raised on the farm, primarily horses. The field was used to grow hay and oats. It has been fallow for several years. As I began to reimagine the space and share my idea of planting flowers my dad said, “That’s not farming.” He sure has been interested in what I’ve been up to though.
You may wonder why I would call it Larch Farm when it is surrounded by pines? Well, of the 40 acres, most of it is wetlands filled with Larch trees more commonly called Tamarack. I often wondered why my ancestors decided to settle in such a swampy area. I only recently learned that it was during the times of the dust bowl that they chose this area between Pine River and Backus because of the abundance of lakes, streams, and wetlands.
